Lamy‌ ‌is‌ ‌situated‌ ‌twenty‌ ‌minutes‌ ‌from‌ ‌downtown‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe;‌ ‌it‌ ‌has‌ ‌been‌ ‌the‌ ‌train‌ ‌depot‌ ‌of‌ ‌Santa‌ Fe‌ ‌for‌ ‌over‌ ‌a‌ ‌century.‌ ‌Amtrak‌ ‌Southwest‌ ‌Chief,‌ ‌a‌ ‌passenger‌ ‌train,‌ ‌makes‌ ‌its‌ ‌daily‌ ‌stops‌ ‌at‌ ‌Lamy‌ on‌ ‌its‌ ‌travel‌ ‌between‌ ‌Los‌ ‌Angeles‌ ‌and‌ Chicago.‌ ‌Lamy‌ ‌was‌ ‌named‌ ‌by‌ ‌Archbishop‌ ‌Jean-Baptiste‌ Lamy.‌ ‌Archbishop‌ ‌Lamy‌ ‌was‌ ‌responsible‌ ‌for‌ ‌the‌ ‌building‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌Cathedral‌ ‌Basilica‌ ‌of‌ ‌Saint‌ Francis‌ ‌of‌ ‌Assisi‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌Loretto‌ ‌Chapel.‌ ‌Lamy’s‌ ‌population‌ ‌at‌ ‌Lamy‌ ‌was‌ ‌180‌ ‌at‌ ‌the‌ ‌2018‌ census. ‌

Burlington‌ ‌Northern‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe,‌ ‌formerly‌ ‌called‌ ‌Atchison,‌ ‌Topeka,‌ ‌&‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe‌ ‌Railroad,‌ ‌runs‌ through‌ ‌Lamy.‌ ‌This‌ ‌railroad‌ ‌was‌ ‌planned‌ ‌to‌ ‌travel‌ ‌from‌ ‌Atchison,‌ ‌Kansan,‌ ‌to‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe‌ ‌and‌ ‌then‌ other‌ ‌points‌ ‌west.‌ ‌As‌ ‌the‌ ‌tracks‌ ‌developed‌ ‌west,‌ ‌heading‌ ‌to‌ ‌New‌ ‌Mexico,‌ ‌the‌ ‌engineers‌ ‌in-charge‌ thought‌ ‌that‌ ‌the‌ ‌hills‌ ‌in‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe‌ ‌made‌ ‌the‌ ‌plan‌ ‌unrealistic. ‌

As‌ ‌a‌ ‌result,‌ ‌the‌ ‌railway‌ ‌was‌ ‌built‌ ‌through‌ ‌Lamy‌ ‌instead.‌ ‌Fast‌ ‌forward,‌ ‌a‌ ‌spur‌ ‌line‌ ‌was‌ ‌developed‌ from‌ ‌Lamy‌ ‌to‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe,‌ ‌taking‌ ‌the‌ ‌railroad‌ ‌finally‌ ‌back‌ ‌to‌ ‌Santa‌ ‌Fe.‌ ‌The‌ ‌Fred‌ ‌Harvey‌ ‌Company,‌ the‌ ‌owner‌ ‌of‌ ‌a‌ ‌chain‌ ‌of‌ ‌restaurants‌ ‌around‌ ‌the‌ ‌United‌ ‌States,‌ ‌built‌ ‌the‌ ‌grand‌ ‌hotel,‌ ‌El‌ ‌Ortiz,‌ ‌in‌ 1896.‌
