Lamy is situated twenty minutes from downtown Santa Fe; it has been the train depot of Santa Fe for over a century. Amtrak Southwest Chief, a passenger train, makes its daily stops at Lamy on its travel between Los Angeles and Chicago. Lamy was named by Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy. As a result, the railway was built through Lamy instead. Fast forward, a spur line was developed from Lamy to Santa Fe, taking the railroad finally back to Santa Fe. The Fred Harvey Company, the owner of a chain of restaurants around the United States, built the grand hotel, El Ortiz, in 1896.

Lamy indeed became a significant railroad junction in the United States. The railroad was developed all the more in 1992 and established Santa Fe Southern Railway, opening a larger space for vintage passenger railcars, modern freight cars, and excursion trains between Lamy and Santa Fe.
